Providing Top-Quality Care for Your New Pet
There are many things for you to take into consideration when adding another furry friend to your family. Do you already have pets? What “tricks” will you (or should you) teach your pet? What kind of food should you buy? How do you make this affordable?
After adding a new pet to your family, the first thing you should do is make an appointment with your veterinarian so they can examine your new pet, administer the appropriate vaccinations, and do a few routine tests to make sure your new friend is happy and healthy.
While at this initial visit, it is important to talk to your vet about many things including:
- Microchipping: Approximately 20% of lost dogs and less than 2% of lost cats who were not microchipped were reunited with their families. In contrast, 52% of dogs and almost 40% of cats with microchips were returned home.
- Pet Nutrition: Feeding your new pet a healthy and nutritious diet is one of the most important things to do for their overall health. Talk to your veterinarian about the best diet plan for your new pet based on his/her breed, age, and other factors.
- Vaccinations: If you’ve added a kitten or puppy to your family, or if you’re planning on adopting a pet from the shelter, it’s important to discuss a vaccination and booster schedule with your vet to ensure your new pet is fully up to date on his/her shots.
