Tips for Preventing Internal Parasites in Your Pet

As previously mentioned, getting your pet on preventative products is one of the best ways you can protect him/her, as well as your entire family, from parasites.

Of course, if you notice any signs of illness in your dog, cat, or other pet, bring him/her in to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. Left untreated, parasites can be very serious and potentially life-threatening. It’s always important to ensure your pet gets the best, most timely care possible.

Here are some other things you can do to help protect your dog, cat, or other pet from parasitic infection:

Remove feces from your yard. Contact with feces is one of the most common ways in which parasites are spread, so ensuring that your dog’s feces (as well as cat feces) are removed from the yard is one of the best ways to limit the spread of parasites.
Don’t let your dog eat feces. Remove feces from the yard and keep your dog on a leash as much as possible when walking him/her to reduce the likelihood that he/she will get into something he/she shouldn’t.
Don’t let your dog enter or drink standing water. Giardia, a fairly common parasite, loves standing water. If your dog drinks this water, he or she can get giardia, which may lead to severe diarrhea, vomiting, and other symptoms.
Schedule a wellness exam. A routine wellness exam may include a fecal test, which can help your veterinarian determine if your dog or cat has parasites. This is especially important for puppies and kittens, who are more prone to parasites.
